A turbo charger can increase your horsepower significantly. Turbo charging kits need to be purchased carefully, as they are usually vehicle-specific to operate 100% correctly. Turbo charging a car increases the air intake pressure by using re-routed exhaust gas to turn a turbine. Increasing air intake pressure forces more air into the combustion system, causing greater combustion potential and ultimately increasing your vehicle's horsepower.

To increase your horsepower even more, some turbochargers include a device called an intercooler (or a charge air cooler).
This is a cooling device for the air, after it leaves the turbine (which heats it up due to the compression), and prior to getting injected into your combustion chambers.
